Northern Star : Authentic and unique Finnish sauna experiences

The Sisterhood - Winter Edition

Five winter days to slow down and share.

Some journeys are defined by a checklist. This one is shaped by who you share time with. The Sisterhood is a women+ space that offers a winter experience, bringing people together through sauna, nature and simple routines. Over five days you move gently through Finland in winter, from the coastline around Kotka to the streets and shoreline of Helsinki. There are public and private saunas, short walks in snow, long lunches, and conversations that have room to breathe. The focus is not performance. It is presence in good company.

What this journey offers
A natural way to spend time with other women. Space to talk, to laugh, and to be quiet. You do things side by side: light the sauna, walk in a national park, eat around an open fire. No roles and no pressure. Just a shared pace in a trusted group.

Journey Overview

Day 1 - From city to coast

Arrival in Helsinki and private transfer east with a stop in the mideaval beautiful city of Porvoo for lunch and a brief visit to a local liquorice maker. Later in the afternoon we check-in at Santalahti Resort: modern cabins by the sea where pine forest meets open shoreline and the snow softens the paths, giving a calm base for shared living and easy access to nature. There is time to settle before dusk, when the Glass Sauna is lit; it is wood-heated with steady heat and open views across the archipelago, and it’s easy to step outside for cold air between rounds. Dinner is served in a traditional Lappish kota by the fire, and the evening closes with quiet introductions and a clear outline of the days ahead.

Day 2 - National park and harbor sauna

The morning brings a winter hike in Valkmusa National Park at an unhurried pace, with lunch and coffee made by the fire, and in the afternoon we turn to city of Kotka’s waterfront for Marina Laituri Sauna, a straightforward public spot where locals drift in and out, and the ice hole sits close to the door so the switch between water and heat feels direct and simple. Hot drinks are available next door and the harbor setting gives a sense of everyday life, and back at the cabins we cook dinner together and let the evening stay low-key.

Day 3 - Lake sauna and move to the city

Gentle yoga opens the day and leads into a long brunch, after which we visit Tykkimäki Sauna with its classic Finnish layout, deep benches and a strong stove that holds a clear, even heat; outside, a kept ice hole leads straight into the lake so the cycle of hot, cold and rest feels natural. By late afternoon we drive to Helsinki and check in at Hotel Home Katajanokka, a former prison turned design hotel with calm rooms and a good restaurant near the waterfront. The evening is open for rest or a short walk.

Day 4 - Helsinki on foot and an old-house sauna

An optional short run sets the tone before breakfast, followed by a food-led city walk with a look at architecture and a little shopping, and in the afternoon we go to Kotiharjun Sauna, the city’s oldest public wood-fired sauna, where dark walls, steady benches and regulars who know the place keep it true to purpose while the heat builds and holds. A three-course dinner rounds off the day and leaves time to wind down. The venue will be a handpicked high quality restaurant from the vibrant Helsinki food scene.

Day 5 - Sea, smoke, and farewell

The morning is spent at Hyvän tuulen Sauna, a private floating sauna on the Baltic. Between sea plunges and the welcoming heat of crackling wood, the experience becomes an intimate farewell, like a warm hug for the group before parting ways. We share a light lunch on the go, carrying the good mood with us as we head for the airport.

This trip will be guided by Finnish Ida Kaijalainen, founder and owner of Northern Star. Ida Kaijalainen grew up with sauna as a constant. Even when she lived and travelled far from Finland, sauna was her link back, a ritual that always brought her home again.

Today Ida is involved in promoting finnish sauna culture not only via sauna trips, but also at sauna festivals, fairs and presentations.

At Northern Star, sauna isn’t just part of the plan. It is the plan. Each journey is designed with care, in places you might never find alone, with people who live this culture every day.

Accommodation

Santalahti Resort, Kotka
At Santalahti Resort, the Luxury Villas offer a warm and social base for the group, set right by the sea and surrounded by nature. Spacious bedrooms with single beds make it easy to share comfortably, while large living rooms and open kitchens invite gathering, cooking and unwinding together. Each villa has its own sauna, where the day naturally slows into evenings of warmth and conversation. Modern design blends with views of forest and coastline, creating a private and practical home to return to after days spent outdoors.

Hotel Katajanokka, Helsinki
In the city, you check into Hotel Home Katajanokka — a former county prison from 1837, now a quiet design hotel in red brick on the island of Katajanokka. Thick walls, softened interiors and steady service create a sense of calm after days in the cold.
Breakfast is served at the hotel’s Linnankellari restaurant, and there’s access to a small sauna and fitness area. Step outside and you’re within walking distance of Uspenski Cathedral, the Market Square and the harbor promenades — close to everything, with a peaceful base to return to.
